EBC or Manaslu Circuit? We compare altitude, difficulty, permits, cost, crowds and scenery to help you choose the right Nepal trek for 2026/27.
EBC vs Manaslu Circuit: Which Trek Is Right for You in 2026/27?
Two of Nepal's most celebrated high-altitude routes, Everest Base Camp and the Manaslu Circuit, get compared in inbox messages and WhatsApp groups every week. Both reach above 5,000 metres, both pass through Sherpa and Tibetan-influenced villages, and both demand respect. But they are different treks for different trekkers. Here is how to decide which one belongs on your itinerary.

Altitude and Difficulty
EBC tops out at Kala Patthar (5,545 m), which is higher than Larkya La Pass on the Manaslu Circuit (5,160 m). That extra 385 metres matters above 5,000 m where every step costs more oxygen. EBC is graded moderate to strenuous; the Manaslu Circuit is graded moderate, though Larkya La is a long high-altitude day that starts before dawn.
Day-to-day terrain also differs. The EBC route follows the Dudh Koshi valley on a well-worn trail with stone stairways worn smooth by decades of foot traffic. The Manaslu Circuit loops a remote valley on a trail that is rougher in places and sees far fewer trekkers — which is exactly what many people come for.
Permits and Logistics
This is the biggest practical difference. EBC requires no restricted area permit and no mandatory guide. You can hire a guide (and we strongly recommend you do), but you are not legally required to.
Manaslu is a restricted area. You must hold a Manaslu Restricted Area Permit and trek with a licensed guide. The minimum group size for the RAP is two trekkers, so solo trekkers need to join a group or pay for a second permit slot. Our 12-day package includes all permits (MCAP, RAP, ACAP) and a licensed guide in the price.
Transport is another difference. EBC starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Lukla (roughly USD 180–200 each way). The Manaslu Circuit starts with an overland drive — a sharing bus takes around 7–8 hours to Macchakhola, or you can upgrade to a private jeep. No domestic flight means no weather delays at Lukla airport, no rebooking fees, and a more predictable start.
Cost Comparison
| Cost Item | EBC 15 Days | Manaslu 12 Days |
|---|---|---|
| Package price (2–4 pax) | USD 1,350 pp | USD 975 pp |
| Domestic flight (Lukla) | ~USD 180–200 each way | Not required |
| Restricted area permit | Not required | Included in package |
| Chumnubri local permit | N/A | USD 8 (own cost) |
| Typical total spend | ~USD 1,800–2,000 pp | ~USD 1,100–1,300 pp |
EBC costs more in total, primarily because of the Lukla flights. The Manaslu Circuit's restricted area permit adds to its base cost, but that is already included in our package price. For trekkers on a tighter budget or shorter timeline, Manaslu often makes more financial sense.
Crowds and Experience
If you want quiet trails, the choice is clear. EBC is one of the most trekked routes on earth. During peak October–November season, Namche Bazaar feels like a small town, teahouses in Dingboche fill up, and the trail to Gorak Shep moves in streams of hikers.
The Manaslu Circuit carries 3,000–4,000 trekkers per year — around 10% of EBC numbers. You will pass through villages where locals are far more interested in their fields than in your GoPro. Above Namrung, teahouses become simpler and more widely spaced. That is part of the charm.
Scenery
Both routes are stunning by any reasonable standard. EBC delivers the iconic Khumbu Icefall, Ama Dablam from every angle, and the strange compressed beauty of glacier moraine at Base Camp. The Manaslu Circuit offers a complete circumambulation of the eighth-highest mountain on earth, crossing from one river valley to another through Tibetan plateau landscapes that feel more remote than anything on the EBC trail.
If you want the classic mountain photograph and the cultural weight of Everest's name, choose EBC. If you want a complete wilderness loop with far fewer people, choose Manaslu.
Who Should Choose Which Trek?
Choose Everest Base Camp if you:
- Want the cultural and historical pull of the Everest name
- Are trekking solo and do not want to sort out a guide
- Are comfortable with domestic flights as part of the adventure
- Want more teahouse options and a more developed trail infrastructure
- Have 15 days and a slightly higher budget
Choose Manaslu Circuit if you:
- Want a proper wilderness loop with very few other trekkers
- Have 12 days and a tighter budget
- Prefer overland transport (no Lukla flight stress)
- Want to feel like the route is genuinely yours
- Are happy having a guide — and on this route, you are required to
Can You Do Both?
Yes, and it is a popular combination for trekkers with three weeks in Nepal. A common itinerary runs Manaslu Circuit first (12 days) then moves to Pokhara, rests a night, and flies to Lukla for EBC (15 days). The two treks cover completely different terrain, different cultural zones, and very different moods.
If you are planning both, contact our team. We run both routes every season and can often sort the permits and logistics in a single booking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Manaslu harder than Everest Base Camp?
Overall, EBC is considered slightly harder due to higher maximum altitude (5,545 m vs 5,160 m) and a longer duration. Larkya La Pass is a demanding single day on the Manaslu Circuit, but the overall grade of Manaslu is listed as moderate. Both require good fitness and proper acclimatisation.
Which trek is better for first-time trekkers in Nepal?
EBC has better trail infrastructure and more teahouse options, which suits first-timers. The Manaslu Circuit's mandatory guide is actually an advantage for beginners as well, since you always have local expertise on hand. Both are appropriate for fit first-time trekkers.
Does Manaslu Circuit include the Annapurna region?
Yes. The circuit exits through the Annapurna Conservation Area on the southern side of Larkya La, so you technically cross from the Manaslu Conservation Area into the Annapurna region near the end. That is why the package includes both an MCAP and an ACAP permit.
Which trek has better mountain views?
Both offer extraordinary views. EBC puts you face-to-face with Everest (8,849 m) and surrounding giants. Manaslu Circuit gives a 360-degree perspective on Manaslu (8,163 m) plus Himalchuli and Ganesh Himal. It comes down to personal preference.
