What is the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek Like?

Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal trekking is an extraordinary adventure that introduces you to the dramatic landscapes and unique culture of the region. During the 10-day journey, you will witness the Himalayan terrain transition from lush rhododendron forests to alpine meadows comprising rugged glacial trails.

You begin your journey from Pokhara and set out on a scenic drive to Kimche. From Kimche, your trek begins. The Annapurna Base Camp is your first destination. So, you will trail along Ghundruk, Sinuwa, and Deurali before entering the Annapurna Sanctuary.  From here, your journey takes you through Bamboo, Deurali, and Macchapuchhure Base Camp. On the fourth day of the trek, you will reach the Annapurna Base Camp.

From ABC, you will descend making a detour toward Mardi Himal. The Mardi Himal trek is a hidden gem in the Annapurna region that allows trekkers to enjoy the peace and tranquility of nature while embracing the magnificent views of Macchapuchure, Annapurna South, and Mardi Himal. On the ninth day, you'll trek to Mardi Himal, and begin your descent toward Pokhara.

Who Can do the ABC and Mardi Himal Trek? How to Prepare for the Once-in-a-Lifetime ABC and Mardi Himal Trek?

The Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek is a moderately challenging journey into the heart of the Annapurna region. This trek is suitable for travelers with a basic level of physical fitness. If you can walk 5-7 hours a day on the rugged Himalayan terrain, you can ensure a memorable trekking experience.

Moreover, you do not need to rigorously train or incorporate routine sessions to build endurance and stamina. However, if you have a sedentary lifestyle, we recommend light hikes or workouts to prepare for the 10-day ABC and Mardi Himal trek.

The trek takes you to a maximum altitude of 4500 meters. Though the risks of altitude sickness are low at this elevation, you will still need to take caution. Remember to walk at a steady pace, stay hydrated, and avoid alcoholic beverages throughout the trek. If you have a pre-existing medical condition, you should consult with your doctor before taking on this journey. 

Also, remember to pack properly for the trek. While you will find rooms with warm and comfortable beds, you will still need to bring essentials like proper trekking boots, layered clothing, a sturdy backpack, trekking poles, sunscreen, and water purification tablets.

Altitude Sickness in the Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek

The chances of altitude sickness increase as you gain elevation while trekking above 2600 meters. Trekking to Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal takes you to a maximum altitude of 4500 meters. Though rare, trekkers still experience altitude sickness. Therefore, it is recommended to take precautions during the 10-day trek and be aware of preventive measures.

If you experience symptoms related to altitude sickness you should immediately inform your guide. Some symptoms include headache, vomiting, nausea, dizziness, numbness, difficulty in breathing, insomnia, and loss of appetite.

Altitude sickness can be prevented with sufficient rest and medication. However, in extreme cases, you may be asked to descend to a lower altitude or require helicopter evacuation.

You begin the ABC and Mardi Himal trek from Pokhara. Depart to Kimche early in the morning in a private taxi taking a scenic 1.5-hour route along the Baglung Highway. You will make your way through villages like Nayapul – the gateway to Annapurna, Birethanti, and Syauli Bazar before finally reaching Kimche.

From Kimche, you will begin your hike toward Ghandruk. You will find stunning views of the Annapurna range, Hiunchuli, and Macchapuchhure as you trek alongside Modi Khola. In Ghandruk, you will receive a warm welcome from the local Gurung community. Immerse yourself in the unique culture and relish the local delicacies before heading to bed.

After a hearty breakfast at Ghandruk, you will leave for Sinuwa. The trail descends through Chhomrong Danda and then ascends to Komrong Khola. From Komrong Khola, you will gradually ascend to Chhomrong and eventually reach Sinuwa after 5-6 hours of trekking.

Sinuwa offers magnificent views of the snow-capped peaks. You will spend the night in a teahouse/lodge in Sinuwa.

Today’s trek takes you through the heart of the Annapurna Sanctuary through dense bamboo and rhododendron forests. You will travel across Bamboo, Dovan (2505 meters), and Himalaya (2920 meters) along rocky Himalayan terrain before reaching Deurali.

The day’s trek includes 6 to 7 hours of strenuous but rewarding journey. You will spend the night in Deurali, surrounded by dense forests.

Today, you will reach your first destination – The Annapurna Base Camp. During this journey, you will trek via the Macchapuchhure Base Camp, which is also considered the final push before the ABC. The trek to ABC lasts approximately 4 to 5 hours. Upon reaching your destination, you can head to your resthouse and unwind.

Take some time to explore the locality and watch out for the incredible sunset.

In the Annapurna Base Camp, wake up before dawn to witness the magnificent sunrise, followed by breakfast at your teahouse. Today, you need to trek a long distance. The descent to Bamboo takes about 6 to 7 hours with the beautiful Annapurna rang, Hiunchuli, Machhapuchhure, Tharpu Chuli, Singhu Chuli, and other peaks trailing you.

Bamboo to Jhinu Danda is a 5-hour long trek. The journey takes you through lush rhododendrons and bamboo forests. Most of the day’s trek is comfortable. However, upon reaching Chhomrung, you will travel through a steep descent to Jhinu Danda.

In Jhinu Danda, you can head to the hot spring to relax your muscles and benefit from its therapeutic properties.

From Jhinu Danda, you’ll take a detour toward the Mardi Himal. You will first trail through the serene route to Forest Camp passing the dense rhododendron, oak, and bamboo forests. As you gain altitude, you will find breathtaking views of Machhapuchhure and Annapurna South peeking from the trees before navigating through the winding forested path before reaching Forest camp.

You will find shelter in a cozy tea house in Forest Camp.

Today, you will reach High Camp following the rugged paths comprising alpine meadows. The trek gradually ascents as you find beautiful icy peaks standing tall in front of you. After a 5 to 6-hour hike, you will reach High Camp – your final rest stop before Mardi Himal Base Camp.

Here, you stand face-to-face with Machhapuchure and the Annapurna range. Watch the clouds sway through these mighty peaks as you are further rewarded with a mesmerizing sunset view.

For the first leg of the journey, you will wake up before dawn and leave on a thrilling ascent through the rugged trails. From Mardi Himal Base Camp, you will begin a steep descent to Low Camp through rhododendron forests.

After a long day, you can rest at your tea house.

Classified as a Grade-B difficulty, this is a moderately difficult journey that takes you to a maximum altitude of 4500 meters at Mardi Himal Base Camp and can be comfortably completed in 10 days.

Being a moderate journey, travelers of all experiences can partake in this 10-day ABC and Mardi Himal Trek. However, first-timers are encouraged to build their endurance and stamina to fully enjoy this immersive trek comprising diverse landscapes, lush forests, terraced fields, rocky ridges, and alpine meadows.

On a day-to-day basis, you will walk 5 to 7 hours over the varying Himalayan terrains. Though slim, there are still chances of altitude sickness. Therefore, remember to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol, and ascend gradually throughout the trek, and if symptoms occur, inform your guide immediately.

Trek Distance: The combined ABC and Mardi Himal trek covers around 100 km, with daily ascents and descents through forests, ridges, and valleys.

Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trekking Permits

The Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal trek requires the following permits:

Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit: The Annapurna Conservation Area Project aims to protect the area's natural and cultural resources. You can collect the ACAP permit from the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC) office in Kathmandu, or Pokhara. The cost of a permit varies according to the trekker's nationality.

Foreign Citizens: NPR 3000 (approximately USD 25) per person
SAARC Citizens: NPR 1000 (approximately USD 8) per person

Trekkers' Information Management System (TIMS) Card: The TIMS card is another mandatory permit while going on the ABC trek. The TIMS card is available at the Nepal Tourism Board Office in Kathmandu or Pokhara. The price of this permit also differs according to the trekker's country. 

Foreign Citizens: NPR 2000 (approximately USD 15) per person
SAARC Citizens: NPR 1000 (approximately USD 8) per person

Best Time for Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal Trek in Nepal

Spring and autumn are the best times for trekking in Annapurna Base Camp and Mardi Himal. These seasons offer stable weather with clear visibility of the mountains. Furthermore, the conditions in the Himalayas are ideal, and trekking is more comfortable.

In spring (March to May), mild temperatures hover between 10 to 20°C during the daytime. At night, the temperatures can come as low as -5 to -10°C. The trail comes to life with blossoming rhododendrons and wildflowers. In the morning, you will find clear visibility with nominal clouds in the afternoons.

Autumn (September to November) is the peak trekking season in the Annapurna region. With the end of the monsoon, the rain stays clear resulting in crisp, blue skies offering stunning mountain views. There are low chances of rain, meaning you will experience a safer and more enjoyable journey.

In winter months from December to February, there are possibilities of trekking. However, it can get frigid in these months with temperatures dropping to a staggering -10°C. Trekking in ABC and Mardi Himal in winter requires a lot of preparation. Likewise, monsoon trekking is considered risky due to slippery routes and constant rain increasing the chances of landslides. The skies are also cloudy and the visibility is low.
