  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project permit cost: Nrs 3,000 per person

Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty:

Poon Hill with Mardi Himal trek combines two moderate treks. The difficulty of the trek remains moderate. However, you will spend a long time trekking. Therefore, trekkers have to be in sound health and fitness. You will walk 5 to 6 hours a day on average daily.

Your stamina and endurance are the key to the success of the trek. The trail mostly follows farming terraces, densely forested hills, and a handful of steep, rocky tracks.

Ascending from Tikhedhunga to Ulleri can be challenging because it involves climbing almost 3000 stone staircases. Likewise, the trail to Mardi Himal Base Camp is steep and rocky, so extra attention is required.

The Poon Hill route is well established, with ample lodges and services. However, the Mardi Himal route lacks adequate tea houses, and the services are also comparatively less. The journey will be adventurous, but you will have to adjust a lot to the mountain lifestyle and its limitations.

Altitude sickness

Altitude sickness is common during the high-altitude treks like Poon Hill with Mardi Himal. It happens because you are not used to the high-altitude environment and pressure. Not all trekkers suffer from it. If you follow the rules and are aware of your body condition, you can avoid altitude sickness.

The symptoms of altitude sickness include nausea, headache, vomiting, insomnia, difficulty breathing, loss of appetite, dizziness, etc. Informing your guide should be your first response if you see any of these symptoms.

Similarly, do the following things to avoid altitude sickness:

  • Ascend slowly
  • Maintain your pace
  • Drink plenty of water
  • Do not consume alcoholic drinks or smoke
  • Have soups and honey-ginger teas daily
  • Listen to your body

Best time to do the Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek:

Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons are the best time to do the Poon Hill with Mardi Himal trekking. This transitional period has stable weather and a mild climate, which makes trekking in the Himalayas safe and achievable.

You do not have to worry about rainfall or snowfall. The trail is in great condition, and the mountain views are crystal clear. On the downside, hundreds of trekkers visit the Annapurna region to do all sorts of treks, so some sections of the trails can get busy.

In spring, the trekking route sees thousands of rhododendrons and other wildflower blossoms. Likewise, autumn embodies the divinity and delightfulness of the biggest Nepalese festivals.

The summer/monsoon (June to August)and winter (December to February) are considered off-time because the weather and climate are unfavorable. However, it doesn't mean you cannot trek in these months at all.

With proper preparation, gear, and guidance, you can do the Poon Hill with Mardi Himal trek in summer/monsoon and winter. The trail will be slippery/muddy in monsoon, very hot climate in summer, and heavy snowfall in winter.

Accommodation and Meals during the Trek:

On the Poon Hill route, you will spend nights in lodges. Mardi Himal trail has tea houses for the trekkers. The facilities are a little less in tea houses than in lodges, but accommodations will be basic. Rooms are shared between two trekkers.

We can get you single rooms at extra cost. Washrooms are shared. You have to use both Western-style and squat toilets. We recommend a sleeping bag for extra comfort and warmth.

Pack your toiletries, including soap and toilet paper, for the trek. Likewise, also pack extra batteries or a power bank for your electronic devices.

You will need money for services like charging, WiFi, and hot showers in both lodges and tea houses. These are personal expenses, so they are not covered in our package cost.

You will get a variety of non-veg and veg dishes along Poon Hill and Mardi Himal trek route. Likewise, there is no issue with clean drinking water. Carry a reusable water bottle and fill it with boiled water provided by lodges/tea houses.

Dishes like thukpa, dal bhat, fried rice, chapati, veggies, thenduk, rice with curry, momo, noodles, porridge, soups, pasta, pizza, sandwiches, French fries, and many others are available on the menu.

Travel insurance for the Poon Hill with Mardi Himal Trek:

Travel insurance is necessary to join Poon Hill with Mardi Himal trek with us. We need it to provide you with immediate air evacuation in case an unseen event arises. Your travel insurance must cover helicopter evacuation and medical bills.

Treks are safe for us, but we cannot predict everything. You may get hurt or sick while trekking. There is no hospital in the Annapurna region, so helicopter evacuation is necessary if the situation is an emergency. So, be mindful of it and buy a well-covered insurance for yourself.
