Overview

Helambu Cultural Trekking is popular among the trekkers for its scenery and favorable climate. Located about 72 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, it extends from north of Taramarang to the tree limit of the Gosainkunda Lake. It is at the lower slopes of Jugal Himal.

The starting point of this trek is from Kathmandu to Sundarijal and the ending point is Tarkeghyang to Kathmandu. There we meet several highland Tamang and Sherpa villages, scattered on both sides of the Melamchi Khola.

This is one of the easiest treks start from the north corner of the capital city Kathmandu. The attraction of the area is more in its socio-cultural and natural diversities.

Helambu, the mid-elevation in the southern buffer of the Langtang National Park, is a study center of Tibetan Buddhism. Yolmo and Tamang peoples maintain a rich cultural heritage, celebrations, lively dances and hospitality with own tradition.

One of the main highlights of this region is Ama Yangri Peak (3,771 meters), the highest point in the Helambu area. It is a sacred site with a small stupa at the summit and offers panoramic views of the Langtang range, Ganesh Himal, Dorje Lakpa, and even Mount Everest on clear days. The hike to Ama Yangri from Tarkeghyang or Sermathang adds both spiritual significance and mountain adventure to the Helambu Cultural Trek, making it a memorable experience.
