What to expect during the Everet Base Camp Trek?

As you will begin trekking, the trail mostly goes through the forests of rhododendron and magnolia. You will follow the Dudh Koshi river and cross it multiple times on suspension bridges. Gradually as you will ascend, the trail winds via uneven cliff sides and passes by picturesque villages. The later part of the trail crosses a glacier field and goes past Khumbu Glacier moraine to the base camp.

The mountain views open us as the trail ascends. In the first few days, you will see Mt. Kongde Ri (6,187 m/20,299 ft) and Mt. Thamserku (6,608 m/21,680 ft). From the Everest View Hotel, you can get the first glimpse of Mt. Everest (8,849 m/29,032 ft), Mt. Lhotse ( 8,516 m/27,940 ft), and Mt. Nuptse (7,861 m/25,791 ft). Soon the trail opens up to the towering presence of numerous peaks and mountains.

Some other notable mountains seen during the Everest base camp trekking area are Mt. Cho Oyu (8,188 m/26,864 ft), Mt. Makalu (8,481 m/27,825 ft), Mt. Ama Dablam (6,812 m/22,349 ft ), Mt. Kanchenjunga (8,586 m/28,169 ft), etc. And the landscape changes with the increase in elevation. At Everest base camp, you will get to see the stunning view of the infamous Khumbu Icefall. Similarly, Kala Patthar offers one of the best sunrises and jaw-dropping mountain panorama.

Who can do the Everest Base Camp trekking?

Even though the Everest Base Camp trek is moderately difficult, this is not only for seasoned trekkers, athletes, or strong individuals. If you have a basic fitness and determination to complete the trek, you can do it. Of course, proper preparation and training are crucial for the EBC trek.

You should be able to manage uphill and downhill terrains. Likewise, make sure you are okay with high altitude gain as the Everest Base Camp trek ascends to 5,545 meters (18,192 ft) from sea level. There are no age restrictions to join this trek. Underage trekkers (below 16 years old) can do the Everest Base Camp trekking with a guardian.

Previous trekking experience is not needed for the Everest Base Camp trek 15 days, however having one will help you a lot. Solo trekkers, families with children, seniors, friends, colleagues, and students can do the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal.

How to prepare for the Everest Base Camp trek in Nepal?

From training yourself physically to learning about the EBC trail, proper preparation is required for a successful completion of the Everest Base Camp trek. Trekkers planning to trek to Everest Base Camp are advised to do strength training, hiking practice, and cardiovascular exercises.

These activities will help you build strength, endurance, and stamina, which is important for the Everest Base Camp trek. Similarly, mental preparation is also crucial. Your attitude towards the limitations of the Everest region, mental resilience, and ability to adapt to the remote mountain environment will highly affect the trek experience.

  • Pack cards, books, or journals to pass the time in the lodge and keep yourself entertained.
  • Get your trekking boots early and break into them to avoid blisters during the trek.

Everest Base Camp trek permit.

You need two permits to do the Everest Base Camp trek. They are the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance permit, and the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit. Both permits are included in our EBC package cost.

Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entrance permit cost: Nrs 3,000 per person

Sagarmatha National Park entry permit cost: Nrs 3,000 per person

*Note: If you trek from Jiri, an additional permit is required. It is called Gaurishankar Conservation Area permit and costs Nrs 3,000 per person.

To obtain the trekking permits, you will need your passport details, passport-sized photos, and permit fees. Our team will obtain the required permit for Everest Base Camp trekking on your behalf.

Everest Base Camp trek difficulty & altitude sickness.

Everest base camp trek difficulty is graded moderate/difficult. It means the trail is intermediate at the start and gets difficult as the days pass by. The terrain is forested and rugged. There are many wooden and suspension bridges along the way that you will cross.

From Phakding (2,610 m/8,563 ft) to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m/11,290 ft) and from Lobuche (4,940 m/16,210 ft) to the Everest base camp (5,364 m/17,598 ft) trail is the most demanding. Other than that, you will come across occasional steep sections.

You may have got an idea about how much altitude you will touch during Everest base camp trekking in Nepal. Given the above chart, altitude sickness is obvious on this trip. Altitude sickness happens if your body is not well acclimatized to the elevation.

You can avoid it if you follow our instructions. Do not remove acclimatization days from the itinerary, drink plenty of water, choose nutritious meals, do not consume alcoholic drinks or smoke, get plenty of sleep, etc.

Is travel insurance needed for the Everest Base Camp trek?

Travel insurance is required to join the Everest base camp trek for your safety in the mountains. Everest region is remote with no adequate health facilities and transportation, so in case of a medical emergency, we use travel insurance to rescue you and transfer you to a hospital in Kathmandu promptly.

Accommodation and meals during the trek.

We use shared lodge accommodation during the Everest base camp trek. Lodge is the basic accommodation on the EBC trail. The rooms are small and cozy, with clean blankets and two beds mostly. Likewise, the washroom can be shared or private. In villages like Lukla, Phakding, and Namche Bazaar, you are most likely to get a private washroom.

If you need a single room, you can let us know in advance. At higher altitudes, single rooms may not be available. Everest region is also known for luxury lodges. You can upgrade your accommodation to a luxury lodge at an additional cost if you wish. Also, check out our luxury EBC trek. It is better to carry toilet paper, toothpaste & toothbrush, lotions, wipes, nail clippers, and other toiletries during the trek instead of relying on the lodges.

Our Everest base camp trek cost includes breakfast, lunch, and dinner during the trek. All the meals will be given as per the menu of the lodges. Dal bat and thukpa are the most common foods. Likewise, momo, noodles, soups, porridge, burgers, pasta, steak, mashed potatoes, etc are also available. For breakfast, you can get eggs, toast, muesli, oats, etc. Coffee, black tea, milk tea, etc are common beverages.

You can refill your water bottle with boiled drinking water in the lodges. Use water purification tablets for double safety. Do not drink water directly from taps or streams. You will come across tea shops along the trail. They sell bars, snacks, beverages, and other stuff. Make sure to carry ample additional Nepali cash to use during trekking for personal expenses. Do know that the cost is usually higher than in the city area.

What is the best time to do the Everest Base Camp trekking?

Weather-wise, spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) are the best seasons to do Everest base camp trekking. These two seasons have comparatively more stable weather than winter and summer/monsoon, which makes trekking quite doable. The sky is mostly clear, so the chances of Lukla's flight delays are quite low. Likewise, the mountain views are unobstructed, and the trail is bloomed with all kinds of seasonal flowers and vegetation.

EBC trek in winter (December to February)

Everest base camp trek in the winter season is possible, but you have to be picky with the time you choose to be in the mountains. Trekking at the start and end of the winter season is recommended. You have to be extra prepared with warm clothes, snacks, and trekking gear. Do note that the Everest region is very cold, sees heavy snowfall, and is windy in the winter.

EBC trek in summer/monsoon (June to August)

Summer/monsoon season has a very unpredictable weather pattern. There can be regular delays and cancellations in Lukla flights. Likewise, the trail is quite muddy and slippery. There are bugs and leaches everywhere in the starting part of the trail. If you are fine with all these obstacles, then we can arrange an EBC trek for you during the summer/monsoon season.

Some helpful tips

Nepali travel visa: A passport with six months of validity from the day the trek starts is needed. Likewise, you can get a Nepali travel visa upon arriving at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu or obtain it from the Nepalese Embassy/Consulate Office in your home country.

Money exchange: There are many banks and money exchange centers in Thamel and around Kathmandu where you can exchange your currency. Likewise, you can also use your international card to withdraw from the ATM.

WiFi/network during the trek: Paid WiFi service is available in villages like Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, and Tengboche. The network may not be stable all the time. For better connection, use a Nepali sim. You can get a tourist sim with ample data.

Hot showers and charging in the lodge: Hot showers are available at an additional cost. Carry wet tissues to wipe your body in case you do not get a chance to use a hot shower. Likewise, carry extra batteries and a power bank for backup. In lodges, you can pay USD 2 to 3 to charge your device.

Trip cancellation & refund: If, by any chance, you end up canceling the trek, we recommend you send us the notice as soon as you can through mail to get a better refund amount. We have a fantastic trip cancellation policy that will let you claim a refund as per the cancellation time. For more information, please check our Terms & Conditions.
