Phaplu to Everest Base Camp Trekking route is the best alternative for trekkers who want to skip the Lukla flight and explore the EBC route the traditional way. Overview of the 17 Days – Phaplu to Everest Base Camp Trekking:

Phaplu to Everest base camp trek-18 Days commences with a ride to Phaplu. The Kathmandu to Phaplu ride offers dramatic sights of the hills, river, shops, terraced fields, and many more. The trek officially starts as soon as you head to Nunthala. Before following the popular EBC trail, you will walk through the culturally rich village of the lower Everest region like Ringmu, Taksindu, Nunthala, Kharikhola, Jubing, Bupsa Danda, and Paiyu.

The journey ahead from Paiyu continues along the same trail as other Everest treks, where you will trek across the UNESCO enlisted site, Sagarmatha National Park, which homes over 118 species of birds like Pheasant, snow cock, Himalayan griffin vulture, and wild lives like red panda, snow leopard, Himalayan Tahr, and many more. The trekking trail is filled with the forest of fir, Pine, Juniper, and rhododendron adding charm to your journey.

One of the major attractions of the Everest base camp trek is the touristic hub, Namche Bazar which offers numerous options to trekkers to enjoy their time amidst the Himalayas. Walking past some of the culturally rich areas of the region like Tengboche, Dingboche, and Lobuche, you will finally summit Everest base camp and Kalapathar to relish in the remarkable panorama of Everest, Khumbu Icefall, Khumbu Glacier, and splendid sunrise view over the Himalayas. The trip ends once you summit Kalapathar and fly back to Kathmandu from Lukla.

After you arrive in Kathmandu, our office representative will welcome you with a gentle smile and a placard with your name written on it. The representative will receive you well and transfer you to the hotel by car/jeep.

Early in the morning, you will drive from Kathmandu to Phaplu by local jeep on a sharing basis. The drive to Phaplu takes around 10-12 hours, depending on the road traffic. Although the journey is long compared to the 30-minute Lukla flight, the majestic sights of riverbanks, terraced farms, and hilly landscape will make it up to you.

After crossing a bridge over the Sunkoshi River, you will continue your journey towards Phaplu. During the Okhaldhunga to Phaplu drive, you can enjoy the alluring sights of the Himalayas likeNumpur Himal and Everest.

✔ Overnight in the tea house, Phaplu.

After early morning breakfast, you will officially start your trekking journey and head towards Ringmu. The trail to Ringmu is straight, passing through lush forest, spring water, Mani walls, and terraced fields. After arriving at Ringmu, you will continue to ascend to Taksindu (2960m).

On the way, you can encounter a small village where the culturally rich Rai, Magar, and Chhetri community resides. You can also visit the Taksindu Gompa to explore the culture of these communities. Further, the trail descends to Nuntahala, where you will be spending the night.

The trek from Nunthala to Kharikhola is short yet enthralling. After breakfast, you’ll trek down to cross the Dudhkoshi river and ascend to Jubing. Walking through the trail adorned with colorful Buddhist flags, you will climb to Kharikhola for overnight (2985m).

After breakfast, you will have an adventurous trek today. Initially, you will cross the Khari Khola and continue the steep climb to Bupsa Danda. The Bupsa Danda is renowned for its exceptional landscape and mountain sights. Passing through the lush woodlands, you arrive at Paiyu village.

Since the village lies in the middle of the forest, the views and the cold breeze coming from the forest are very refreshing.

On this day, you’ll trek down to Surke, where you can witness Lukla on your north. The trail to Phakding from Surke is mixed with uphill and downhill climbs that passes through the rich Sherpa villages adorned with prayer flags and bells.

You can also explore the lifestyle of locals and enjoy the sights of snowcapped mountains en route to Phakding.

Today, we will trek to Namche Bazaar. The trail from Phakding to Namche Bazar starts as you cross the suspension bridge and walk past Bankar admiring the sights of the waterfall and Thamserku. After crossing another suspension bridge, you will arrive at Manjo, from where you will enter the incredible Khumbu valley and then trek through the Sagarmatha National Park. The journey ahead from Manjo to Jorsalle is covered by rhododendron and pine forest.

The path ahead from Jorsalle becomes moderately tricky with gradual uphill and downhill climbs. After crossing 4-5 suspension bridges and walking on the riverbank, you will climb to Namche Bazaar. Once you arrive at Namche, you can enjoy the remarkable sights of Everest, Ama Dablam, Lhotse, Nuptse, and Tawoche are noticeable.

✔ Overnight at Tea House

Today, you will rest at Namche Bazaar to adjust to the change in the elevation. Namche is a vibrant village sited in a great-secluded concave shape that will allow you to enjoy the superb views of the whole area as well as the Himalayas like Ama Dablam (6856m), Thamserku (6608m), Everest (8848.86m), Lhotse and Nuptse. You can opt to stroll the streets of Namche Bazar or hike to Everest View hotel. The Everest view hotel is the highest placed hotel in the world that offers spectacular sights of the Himalayas.

✔ Overnight at Tea House in Namche bazaar

After enjoying the early morning breakfast, we will move on to Tengboche, passing through the village of Kyanjuma, green fields, and the rhododendron forest. The walk from Namche to Tengboche is relatively easy and takes around 4 hours. En route to Tengboche, you can explore the Tengboche Monastery elevating at an altitude of 3860m.
Enjoying the sights of Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Thamserku, Khangtaiga, Ama Dablam, and Nuptse, you will arrive at Tengboche for the overnight.

Since you will be trekking through the national park area, you may also encounter wild lives like musk deer and a multicolored pheasant named Danphe (National bird) on the way.

Today, we will continue our journey to Dingboche, set at 4410m. Initially, on the trail, you will descend to Deboche, passing through the forest area filled with birches, conifers, and rhododendron.

Enjoying the sights of the Himalayas like Ama Dablam, Nuptse, Lhotse, and Everest, and the sceneries of Mani walls and chortens, you will cross a suspension bridge over the Imja river, making your way to the village of Samare. The trail ahead from Samare widens, and you continue to walk along the tree line until you arrive at Dingboche.

It will be our second acclimatization in the Khumbu region. Dingboche is the last Sherpa settlement with enchanting terraced fields. You can either stay in your room or hike to Chhukung-Ri, which offers astounding sights of the icefalls, Lhotse Himal and Island peak.

The journey from Dingboche to Lobuche is one of the exciting walks, as you will be crossing one of the challenging passes, the Thokla pass. Initially, on today's trail, you will climb towards Pheriche valley, and then through yak pastures, the trail continues towards the Thokla Pass. From the pass, you can enjoy breathtaking sights of Nuptse, Lhotse, and other mountains over 7000m.

The trail ahead from the pass moves on a smooth, leveled path before getting to Lobuche. As you arrive at Lobuche, the dramatic vistas of Pumori (7145m), and Changtse (7550m), will captivate you.

✔ Overnight at Tea House

The most awaited day of the trip is finally here. Today, you will be summiting the Everest base camp. Leaving behind Lobuche, you will walk along the sandy trail to Gorakshep. The path from Gorakshep to EBC is filled with ups and downs through the loose rocks and a few flat parts that take around one and a half hours.

As you arrive at the base camp, the famous rock and flag pile will welcome you and congratulate you on the successful climb. From base camp, you can enjoy the 360-degree panorama of the Himalayas and spend some time amidst nature before heading down to Gorakshep  for overnight.

Early in the morning, you will head to Kalapathar, leaving behind Gorakshep to enjoy the sunrise and panorama of Everest. The Gorakshep to Kalapathar hike takes around 2 hours and offers outstanding sights of the Khumbu glacier, Khumbu icefall, and Everest.

Located at an altitude of 5550m, Kalapathar is an excellent viewpoint of the Everest region. The marvelous peak views of Everest (8848m), Pumori (7,145m), Lingtren (6,697m), Khumbutse (6,623m), Changtse (7,750m), etc. will welcome you at their best. After spending a memorable time in the area, you will trek back to Pheriche.

Today's trek will be one of the extended walks of the EBC trek. Tackling some uphills and downhill walks, passing small villages like Khunde and Thame, you will arrive at the tourist hub, Namche Bazar.

Connect wifi on your phone, call your friends and family, and have some chilled beer to celebrate the successful summit.

As you wake up today, soak yourself in the views of the Himalayas and say goodbye to the incredible Khumbu region. Traversing through the large suspension bridge over the Dudh Koshi River, you will pass through Jorsale to reach Manjo. From Manjo, you will trek to Lukla, which will take around 5 hours.

In the morning, you will catch a scenic flight back to Kathmandu. Upon your arrival in Kathmandu, you will be transferred to the hotel.

Today is the last day of the trek in Nepal. Our representative will help you to drive to the airport for the departure. Thank you for trusting us to plan your Nepal trip. Have a safe flight back home.

  • Nepal entry visa fee, you can easily issue the visa upon your arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport–Kathmandu. You will require 2 passport size photos, $30 USD per person.

  • Your personal equipment for trekking. [Sleeping bag (-15), down jacket, trekking shoes, sun glass, sunscreen, gloves, trekking stick]
  • International airfare and airport departure tax.
  • Your all meal lunch & dinner while you stay in Kathmandu.
  • Local government tax of Rs 2000 per person to be paid in Lukla counter directly.
  • In the Lukla flight, the luggage of 12 kg is only included. If you have extra baggage, you will have to pay extra per kg Rs 100.
  • If there is early arrival or late departure other than the trek date, and if you are back to Kathmandu early from the trek due to any problem or rescue, the extra accommodation is not included.
  • Your trip includes only one-time airport transfer by Lukla. If you have to return back to hotel again and again go to Lukla Airport because of weather problem, it will be your additional pay.

Add-ons & Options

The EBC trek begins with an early morning flight to Lukla, either from Kathmandu Airport or Ramechhap Airport. It is a short but beautiful flight with stunning Himalayan mountain views. From Lukla, we will begin trekking with porters and descend to Phakding for the night stay. The trail goes through forests and small villages, offering stunning views of mountains like Kongde Ri and Chamlang.

*Note: If you take a Lukla flight from Ramechhap Airport, you will leave the hotel in Kathmandu around 1:00 AM and dive to the Ramechhap airport in sharing bus. During the peak trekking seasons, the Lukla flights get shifted to Ramechhap Airport because of very high air traffic.
