Tour Overview: Discover Bhutan – The Land of the Thunder Dragon

Welcome to the Last Great Himalayan Kingdom

As the world of travel advances, Bhutan remains frozen in time. Along with having rich spiritual values and excess folk rituals, it has largely been untouched and unexploited as compared to other Buddhist countries. Bhutan enjoys a Buddhist identity, covering an area of above 38 thousand Km2 with a population barely above 700k. Even though Bhutan focuses on Happiness instead of economic growth, it serves as proof for developing nations for simple yet effective tourism.

With a mix of beautiful Tibetan monasteries atop massive hills and peaceful strolls taking you through the age-old settlements enriched with deep-rooted nature temples and iconic staggered fortresses known as Dzonges, this voyage will surely give any traveler an insight into the customs enduring dated centuries. In terms of travel regions, this trip would disentangle Thimphu and Punakha along with Rek Dhama.

Why is Bhutan Called the “Land of the Thunder Dragon”?

Bhutan takes major inspiration from Druk (thunder dragon), who is known to be the protector of that nation along with being their symbol. The Drukpa tradition of Tibetan Buddhism has greatly influenced the nation's identity, and it was once thought that the roar of this legendary dragon was caused by the thundering storms that blow in from the Himalayas. The white dragon, which stands for strength, purity, and the defense of its people, is even featured on Bhutan's national flag. For this reason, Bhutan is often known as the 'Land of the Thunder Dragon'.

A Country Built on Harmony & Spirituality

Because of Bhutan’s isolation, the country was able to preserve its environment and culture in some truly remarkable ways. The modern history of Bhutan began in the 17th century when Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal unified the country with military prowess and established governing principles based on Lord Buddha. Unlike most South Asian countries, Bhutan was never a victim of colonization. Rather, it followed an independent self-determined journey guided by Buddhist values and communal togetherness.

The impact of Vajrayana Buddhism, which is regarded as one of the branches of Tantric Mahayana Buddhism, is still deeply woven into daily life activities even today. It connects modern daily life to the past with habitual customs such as monks dressed in their traditional maroon robes, fluttering prayer flags on mountain ridges, and people spinning prayer wheels at every corner.
