Nepal is highly influenced by Buddhism. There are a lot of important Buddhist sites in Nepal which includes Lumbini (the birthplace of Lord Buddha), Swayambhunnath, Boudhanath, Wolrd Peace Pagoda etc. Lumbini is the most important Buddhist pilgrimage site of the world in of Nepal. According to Buddhist tradition, Queen Mayadevi gave birth to Siddhartha Gautama in 563 BCE. Gautama, who achieved Enlightenment sometime around 528 BCE and became the Buddha then, founded Buddhism. This is why Lumibini is important for Buddhist pilgrimage site. Lumbini has a number of temples, including ruins of ancient monasteries, a sacred Bodhi tree, an ancient bathing pond Puskarini or Holy Pond where the Buddha’s mother took the ritual dip prior to his birth and where he had his first bath, the Ashoka pillar which includes the inscriptions identifying the birthplace of Buddha and the Mayadevi Temple. Many foreign countries have also built different monasteries around Lumbini. Lumbini is listed under the UNESCO world heritage site.
Swayambhunath also known as monkey temple is said to have evolved spontaneously when the valley was created out of an ancient lake more than 2,000 years ago. It said that Manjushri saw a lotus flower in the center of the lake, which emitted brilliant radiance. He then cut a gorge at Chovar with his flaming sword to allow the lake to drain. The place where the lotus flower settled became the great Swayambhunath Stupa and the valley thus became habitable. There are a lot of monasteries around Swayambhu. The fluttering of prayer flags, the rows of prayer wheels around the hill brings peace to your soul.
Boudhanath is one of the biggest Stupas of the world. Boudhanath is the center of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. It is built in the shape of a mandala designed to replicate the Gyangtse of Tibet. The location of the stupa is on the ancient trade route to Tibet. Tibetan merchants of past rested and offered prayers for centuries at this place. The inspiring white dome is always filled with energy. People light a butter lamp and send prayer. There a lot of souvenirs shop to look around for souvenirs. You observe all this from nearby rooftop restaurants. There more than 50 gompas or Tibetan convent around Boudhanath.
Pokhara Shanti Stupa Shrine was built as a symbol of peace. Situated at the height of 1100 meters on the Ananda Hill, it is built as Buddhist pagoda-style monument. It provides a panoramic view of the Annapurna range, Pokhara city and Fewa Lake. There are four different statue of Buddha each statue represents important events related to the Buddha and were named according to where they took place. Dharmachakra is placed below the gajur (pinnacle) which signifies the wheel of life, dharma and the teachings of the Buddha. The top of the golden Gajur holds the crystal stone from Sri Lanka which symbolizes intellect and grace. Dhamma hall, with the Buddha statue, is located near the peace pagoda where Buddhist rituals take place daily and larger prayers are performed on important dates according to the lunar calendar, such as on full moon day.
